Good Intercom, Poor Room MonitorJan 06, 2009 Primary reason for purchase was to monitor the room in which a patient was recovering at home i.e. to hear sounds and verbal requests from patient without their having to operate anything; secondary purpose was to communicate back to patient from a remote room. System worked poorly in monitoring mode (hard to hear what patient was saying or requesting) and well in intercom mode. A cheap "baby monitor" was much clearer and more senitive in monitoring the patient room. Reporter RWIS Chamberlain Wireless Portable 4-Channel Intercom System (Pair)
Intercom reviewJan 06, 2009 My pole barn is 100 ft. from the house and has metal siding. The only way the intercom would work was if the overhead door was open. That isn't acceptable in Minnesota winters. I even tried using 120 volt adapters. No luck!
WarningJan 04, 2009 WARNING. RWIA and RWIS units appear to be orphan products to me. I have ordered three of these. There is no warranty that I can find. That alone should tell you something, but there's more. Units use 4 AA batteries each. That would be a total power supply of 6 volts, yet the AC adapter connector on the back is clearly marked "12 VDC" I made the mistake of believing the marking and connected an adapter at 12VDC, which instantly blew out the unit. To Amazon's great credit it was speedily replaced without complaint.
More yet. The instructions are disorganized, vague and incomplete. I managed to get my three units set up but it took hours of experimentation. Anyone who has set one up quickly has just been lucky. The instructions give no indication of polarity for the AC adapter either.
And even more. Chamberlain's web site does not seem to support the RWIA/RWIS system other than the ability to download the owners manual. If you follow the "product registration" links, the only thing you will find is garage door openers.

Good productDec 12, 2008 I bought this product after returning a Westinghouse unit that did not even work out of the box. From my experince with radios in general, I doubt the 1 year battery claims
Pros:
Excellent sound quality and ease of use
Versaitility for adding other units
Security features so neighbors cannot hear
Appears to be rugged and durable
Compact
Cons:
Directions are poor - it took some experimenting to get the units to talk with each other and we had to figure out to change channels you had to momentarily press the talk butto then the channel button.
Batteries were hard to put in and case actually pushed into case and I had to pull it back out but nothing was damaged.
The inlet for an adapter is 12VDC but I don't see any notations on polarity so I am scared to put in an adapter - may have to see if they sell one or can tell me.

Wish I had thought of this soonerDec 02, 2008 We are forever screaming at each other up or down the stairs. For some reason I never thought about using an intercom system. Works very well.
